7 Simple Habits for a Cleaner Healthier Home

Most of us wish our homes would just stay clean all year round with minimal effort. However, the reality is that where there are people, there will be dirt. So how do we cultivate habits for a cleaner, healthier home? Do you have to resign yourself to major clean-ups taking up your weekends or simply learn to live with the chaos?

Our environments reflect our inner state. Chaos in the home is not an option. Still, you don’t need to spend all your free time cleaning and tidying.

By establishing some simple daily habits for a cleaner healthier home, you can avoid chaos, clutter, and dirt. This way, cleaning won’t take up most of your time. Here are seven simple tips you can practice to help you achieve this goal.

1. Take off your shoes before walking in.

Why? They may facilitate germ movement. Consider setting up an entryway shoe rack and leave a pair of comfy slippers by your front door to slip into. If you must use your hands to take off your shoes, follow up with handwashing.

2. Close the toilet lid before you flush

Studies have illuminated the risk of “toilet plumes,” or aerosols that are produced when you flush a toilet. If you leave the lid open when you flush, aerosols are released into the air. These can land on nearby surfaces that others may touch. Yuck!

Always close the lid to prevent the spread of the coronavirus (and other germs and bacteria) before flushing. While you are at it, store your toothbrush as far away from the toilet as possible.

3. Learn the Importance of ‘contact time’

Most disinfecting sprays and products need to sit on a surface for a certain length of time to effectively destroy germs or bacteria. Don’t rush to wipe them down. A little patience will make your home much cleaner.

4. Stop taking your phone into the bathroom

Assuming you don’t disinfect your phone after each loo encounter, you could be exposing your (hopefully) freshly washed hands to germs the second you pick up your phone. We know, it may be boring but not being without your phone for a few minutes won’t kill you.

5. Clean Your Reusable Shopping Bags

It’s simple. If you don’t have a dedicated bag for transporting raw meat and fish, you could be spreading e.g. e-coli or salmonella to the rest of your groceries and other surfaces.

6. Put things away as you use them.

It is so much easier to clean you go rather than wait and have to undertake a huge cleaning session all at once. Sometimes this is easier said than done, but it’s still something to strive for. The key to making this work is to ensure that everything has its own place. Do that first if you haven’t already.

Also, clean as you cook.

7. Declutter once a month

Some things will pile up naturally, like magazines, books, empty food containers, and even socks that lost their match. Spend an hour once every month to go through these things and recycle, donate or toss what’s not needed any longer. Keeping your home free from stuff you don’t use and that doesn’t give you joy will help you feel calm and in control.
